2011 has been a year full of positive experiences, interesting commissions, challenging collaborations, and happy events and we don't know where to start to thanks everyone that has supported us, follow us and trusted us with their most precious belongings.
This year a dear customer contacted us with a very unusual request to re-model her 30 years old horse stick because she wanted to pass it on to Thomas, her first child. We were amazed by the request but very excited to please such young customer, his face and his happiness was priceless when we gave him back his toy!
We had a lots fun with it and we wanted to share this with you, thinking that sometimes happiness comes from very unexpected places...

A Chair Affair for Natuzzi

We are extremely exited that Natuzzi have asked us to transform their iconic Sound Chair. It will be displayed for ‘A Chair Affair’ exhibition during the London Design Festival 2011, at their store in centralLondon.
Besides us Natuzzi has invited nine up-and-coming designers to offer a re-design of their chair:
Davide Bianchi, Liqui Design, Joachim King, Katrin Baumgarten, Melanie Porter, Valentina Gonzalez Wohlers, Ryan Todd and Francesca Mancini.

Each of the talented designers, or design collectives will offer their alternative designs by painting, embellishing, reupholstering and in some case, completely remodelling the existing Sound Chairs.

Their exciting creations will then be exhibited at the Natuzzi store, 80-81 Tottenham Court Road, London W1T 4TE from 17th to 25th September along with a collection of re-designed Natuzzi chairs by international designers from Belgium and Russia. A private view reception, sponsored by Italian aperitif Aperol, will also be held in store on Wednesday 21st September from 6pm – 9pm.

We LOVE LONDON, especially at this time of the year (LDF) because we get to collaborate with people that we love and to realize the most exiting work!

Love London, a new brand, launching autumn 2011 at Olympia exhibition halls, London, is a book of photographs – and wallpaper, murals, bone china,tea towels and more. Love London products launch at Top Drawer Olympia 11-13 September stand D36.

Barbara Chandler’s book of photographs, titled Love London, is published this autumn by Batsford www.annovabooks.com. It is a neat little hardback, beautifully designed and bound, and small enough to slip into a bag - and it only costs £9.99. With its 180 colour and black-and-white photographs, Londoners are loving it (to keep or for a present), and tourists, too, are snapping it up at gift boutiques, museum shops, and book stores all over the capital. Amazon has already re-ordered. Photographs are teamed with over 100 quotes about London, from 15^th century poetry to a modern blog, with Shakespeare, Milton, Johnson, Dickens and many many more along the way.

Love London - the book - is launched to the trade at Top Drawer Autumn 2011, London’s major show at Olympia for high-quality design-led home and fashion accessories and gifts. And here Love London will also launch its own brand of wallpaper and murals, tea towels, cushions, roller blinds, aprons, bone china collectibles, and more.

It all started with the tea towels. “I have always wanted to see my photographs printed onto fabric,” says Barbara. “And tea towels seem perfect – the proportions are just right.” Barbara has a long friendship with Digetex, who have state-of-the-art digital printing machinery in Manchester. Managing director Roger Wills, and creative director Debbie Mckeegan founded their company in 2003, the first to see the potential of, and to heavily invest in, new ground-breaking digital fabric-printing technologies.

Indeed, now that printing onto wall coverings and fabric is so sophisticated and in such high detail, it becomes possible for artefacts such as a tea towel or a cushion to be a photograph in its own right – just printed onto something a little different. “So that’s what I am doing with DigetexHOME,”

says Barbara. Photo-printed tea towels cost £9.99, and cushions from £40. “We are also producing superb photo-printed murals of London scenes and people, which can fill a whole wall – and that’s incredibly exciting for a photographer.” Roller blinds are another option.

Bone china was another medium Barbara hankered after. Again a friendship – this time with Paul Bishop, director of The New English in Stoke-on-Trent – has led to a first edition of four Love London beautiful bone china photo-printed wall plates, and a series of six little trinket boxes, all printed (digitally again) to a very high quality. The New English is unique in combining contemporary art and graphics with old ceramic crafts, but is breaking fresh ground here in the use of photography and digital printing.

Putting Love London fabrics onto chairs (or even a settee...) is master craftsman Andrea Simonutti of North London’s Urban Upholstery (more friends), who, together with artist/designer Patrizia Sottile, rescue abandoned pieces of furniture and expertly reinvent them as vintage. “I see upholstery as an art,” says Andrea, “and we are passionate about transforming old piece.” www.urbanupholstery.com

Partnering Barbara in the Love London launch is Sahra Gott, the highly successful communications and brand manager for Kevin McCloud. “She is holding my hand all the way, and shaping our brand,” says Barbara. “I could not do this without her.”

All Love London products are designed and made in England – textiles and wallpapers in Manchester,

china in Stoke-on-Trent, and upholstery in London. “We will never take Love London out of the UK,” Barbara and Sahra vow. “Love London made in China would be a contradiction in terms.”

Barbara Chandler is a journalist best known for her design writing. But she is also an accomplished photographer who has been exhibiting and selling her work for nearly 25 years. Her framed prints currently sell in the Conran Shop worldwide. She has been making her unique handmade photo-cards since the early 90s. Each has a genuine photographic print stuck down and signed by Barbara – a real signed photo to send or frame at very modest cost. These have been the Conran Shop’s best selling range of cards, and some of the images have now sold in thousands, through other shops, markets, and Barbara’s own website. Her show Love London at Habitat on Regent Street in September 2008 was a sell out, with an edition of 200 mounted, framed and signed prints.

In the introduction to her book Love London Barbara observes that “vibrant, buzzing, thrilling London is on a roll - it is now considered the capital of the world.” She laughs – “and now my photographs are literally on a roll, too, along with tea towels and plates. For me this is thrilling, too. Photography, essentially an art of innovation and discovery, now has a new dimension.”

It was simply a great fun to celebrate two years of successful collaborations with such extraordinary people and creativity!

Special Guest: Audio Architecture

"Experimenter en Couleur" of Audio Architecture will be showcasing their work at our forthcoming Private Event held on Sunday the 28th at 14:30!
They are a group of artists specialised on innovation and emerging technologies and for the occasion they will present "Testing The Wheel", their first recorded work after 10 years of research and experimentation.
When we invited them to play at our event they immediately responded with an idea to make a specific work for us, related to what we are doing. Scanning fabrics and who knows what else to compose a site specific track...!
Their music is inspired by sounds recorded in space to express the multidimensionality and physicality of everything that surrounds us.
Materials react in different ways because they have a specific molecule structure that moves when forces or energies are applied or hit them. They absorb and reflect light to appear to our naked eyes with a specific colour and they express a different feeling to our touch.
Sound travels in a similar way to light, hitting any object around us and assuming a specific value when crosses them.
We are living in a dynamic world where subsystems transform energies and they constantly stimulate our perception.
Creating spaces means understanding the potentialities of every material and keeping into account all the elements such as sound, light, forces in order to generate a complex system of reactions that eventually will please our senses with their aesthetics...

In the mean time:
Testing The Wheel
These early compositions aim to refine and define several methods in generative music making, to prove the indefinite moods and experiences possible and understand more of how the listener is stimulated by such unfamiliar territory.
The compositions break from the barriers of scale and timing associated
with traditional music to allow the freedom to explore new possibilities. All use generative tools in their music creation and are the outcome of self-made audio and visual synthesisers coupled to different stimuli. Control comes in varying degrees from the rules set at the beginning of the development process.
Methods for playing the machines vary greatly according to project. Unexpected outcomes are celebrated and essential to the process.

Urban Upholstery will be away from the 7th to the 30th of August 2010.
Every summer we going to Italy to work on a big scale project of restoring an old house, recycling everything it is available and sourcing locally materials that we can't find around.
The house seats in the inside land of Liguria in a small town called Rio that counts 35 inhabitants. We love to be part of such small community, they are all very friendly and generous with us.
It is our escape from our busy/business life and it works pretty well: hard work, excellent fresh growing food, long walks in the mountains, swimming at the local river to avoid the overcrowded Italian beaches, and most of all surviving to all the needs and requirements that a comfortable life in the city is imposing to us.
Well, nice weather is a guarantee ... it's hot and sunny all the time...a lots of wild life around, we are literally sharing the house with Victor_the red squirrel and Pippi_a family of bats. They live in the attic and we all meet at night or in the early morning for breakfast...When is all quite around a family of wild boars (the little ones weight 70 kilos each) comes close to the house and eats the walnuts that falling from our trees.
Every year friends and volunteers join us in this adventure to make it even more special...Big Thanks to everyone that up to now has contributed to this fantastic project.

We will come back at work the 31st of August with a program full of events: Collective_exhibition in our showroom, open studios and Eco Design Christmas Fair.
We are very happy of the success that our upcycling concept and program of exhibitions have collected in the last two years and we will work even harder to make it more successful!

SECONDNATURE AT URBAN UPHOLSTERY

A new exciting exhibition has started at Urban Upholstery! Till the end of September 2010 we will showcase a selection of unique and reclaimed steel sculptures by Secondnature. Their contemporary wall and garden pieces are inspired by natural forms focusing on silhouettes, shadows and movement of leaf, branch and light.
Secondanature is a creative partnership between graphic designer Ian Turnock and fine artist Susan Laughton. They cross the boundaries of art and design to create innovative and distinctive abstract sculpture.
Their unconventional approach combines a graphic designers' eye for line and pattern with a fine artists feel for materials and texture. Traditional and digital drawings and photographs are used as starting point.
Elements of chance and play are then used to digitally create organic shapes. These are refined, developed
and then water jet cut into the metal thus transforming the drawn line into a tangible object.
They work with stainless steel, aluminium, copper and reclaimed mild steel, using traditional and modern
finishing techniques to industrial polishing.

As part of The Barbican's 'Do Something Different' event, Sat and Sunday 6th and 7th March, Eco Design Fair have been invited to host an "Eco Design Pop-Up Shop" in the Barbican Foyer area.
For two days only, a pop-up shop selling unique contemporary products, all designed and made with sustainability in mind. With a selection of goods to suit every taste and pocket - from handmade recycled notebooks to upcycled furniture (Urban Upholstery Ltd).

Lighting, fashion, jewellery, home accessories, toys, bicycle storage solutions, technology and more will be on sale.

This event is taking place on Level G.

Urban Upholstery Ltd & Elli Popp are proud to announce the launch of their collaborative collection. From the 10th of February to the 10th of May 2010, a display of stylish interior creations, including selected works as furniture, cushions, fabrics, wallpapers, and ceramics, is taking place at Urban Upholstery’s Showroom to celebrate the event.

As collaborative work they are presenting “INbox” multi-purpose stools and “Esmeralda” a revamped period style chair that inspired by Natural motif, bond the bold, contemporary and ethical approach to design by Urban Upholstery with the neo-romantic design of Elli Popp fabrics.

"INbox" is a collection of stools that can be used in numerous ways adding functionality, style and romanticism to any interior space.

Built from discarded plywood they are conceived to increase the value of their original material and to add value to the interior space.
“INbox 001 & 002” are modular elements that can be customised to any size.
Their design emphasizes their modularity presenting clear side cuts to match the ‘Bebe Palm’ designed fabric by Elli Popp with colourful felt.
They can be used as single units -centrepiece or adding two or more units they can engage an entire wall, providing compact seating in tight quarter and increasing the functionality of small spaces.
They can be enjoyed in living spaces as coffee table, footstool and side table adding functions, as seating and storing. They can provide a seat at the entrance door for seating down to put on shoes and with their hidden storage, are ideal for hiding mitts and gloves when not in use.
Using areas below windows for seating and storage they visually are expanding the indoor space.

'INbox 003’ is an elegant rounded centrepiece, that built from reclaimed plywood and upholstered with buttoning, matches the two versions of the black and white design fabric ‘Butterfly Valley’ by Elli Popp. It can be used as side table, coffee table, footstool and as an extra seat for impromptu parties.
Urban Upholstery Ltd and Elli Popp’s collection also presents “Esmeralda” chair, a project to revive period style furniture with a contemporary look.
Inspired by composition of Indian colours, “Esmeralda” sets apart from the constriction of its imposing presence to become an exotic and fun piece. Madeleine Boulesteix: "I started making chandeliers after finding 40 facetted glass drops in a pile of rubbish. First I made one for myself, which led to ideas for another and another and so on and I’ve been making them ever since.
When I started to gather things to make a structure with, I discovered that all the items I needed were already there just waiting for me to assemble them. I searched in charity shops, car boot sales and scrap metal yards. I don’t remember ever making a decision to use kitchenware I just found that they supplied so many useful forms, like circular metal objects - sometimes already with holes in. I prefer to work with things I’ve found and let their qualities dictate what happens.
Old kitchen utensils are really familiar objects but to me not very useful in their traditional role. I’ve never used a pastry cutter for pastry or a toast rack for toast but they seem nice jaunty objects with more potential, so I liberate them from their domestic duties by incorporating them in my chandeliers."

Beryl, Mavis & Coco designed by Marnie Moyle is elegant in her spiral form. She is a delight to behold from within, the sumptuous feather filled cushion is luxurious and the sprung base offers good support.

Unlike standard lounge furniture where one faces out, ‘Beryl, Mavis & Coco’ offers a myriad of seating options; private space for reading, playing a console, listening to music or just purely for relaxation. Yet it can also be shared with friends and/or loved ones in the art of conversation.

As space is at a premium within any environment, furniture which presents the user with more than just a place to watch TV or have a cup of tea is always welcomed. ‘Beryl, Mavis & Coco’ is mood furniture and creates a space within a space.

The component parts are made using reclaimed timbers and the upholstery by Urban Upholstery uses traditional craftsmanship and materials as Rubberised Horsehair, Coir, Hessian and Recycled cotton textiles. The feet are made from locally sourced Green Oak and turned by Marnie. Although the springs are not made in the UK but they can be recycled!

The unusual shape and strict sustainability criteria presented it’s challenges, it was important that the product would stand the test of time within both a residential and commercial environment. ‘Beryl Mavis & Coco’ has been made using traditional methods so that she can easily be reupholstered at any time.
She is covered in row canvas and she will be available in a selection of finest English Wools, Hemp and a Stinging Nettle/ Wool mix. Alternatively, a fabric of your own choosing may be applied.

Kingsland_chair

Kingsland_chair is the last arrival by Urban Upholstery.
Presented the 19th of September 2009 at Hoxton Hall Theatre,
during the Open House weekend.
Kingsland is the third furniture designed to incorporate African prints sourced in the local area of Dalston. The frame in polyurethane has been restored to its original egg shape. Matching three different fabrics and texture the chair has been covered with blue sateen leather, 90% green wool fabric and African cotton batik. The main body has been upholstered with foam and Dacron, the seat cushion in rubber foam and Dacron and the back cushion with wool sheet.

Two previous commissions have been inspired by African style and used African Batik (Olivia_chair and Neal_sofa)

"Urban Upholstery bold and contemporary design gives new life to discarded furniture that has been rescued from the streets." Engaging with the underground space of the railway arches at London Bridge, they evoke an urban path where waste has been uplifted to the state of unique objects.
Emphasised with punctual lights and parallel lines, the gallery-corridor that starts from Joiner Street presents a scenario of scattered frames and suspended furniture.

Visual and Audio Installations by Din-collective and Crunch Art are taking place in the same time.

Space + Time Exhibition ( 19 -20 September 2009)

Design is about space and time, the space we inhabit and the objects we choose to fill it with. Renewable resources are paramount to the sustainability of our environment.
The exhibition is in collaboration with Hoxton Halls Architecture Open House event, which happens every year and attracts up to 2000 visitors over the weekend.

'Urban Upholstery' & 'Bird in the Hand' are proud to announce a summer collaboration, at the Urban Upholstery Showroom, N1 5SF
From the 26th June until the 9th September
the exhibition includes deck chairs, bags, cushions and fabrics.
'Bird In the Hand", founded by Laura Hamilton in 2008, produces hand-printed textiles on top quality organic cotton and linen. Her first collection is the reissuing of designs printed in Jamaica during the 1960s and '70s. They are bold botanical prints with a rich and contemporary feel.

SPIRIT OF DESIGN

SPIRIT OF DESIGN is an exhibition that followed the step of the London Design Week 2008 to showcase a selection of work by Fashion and Textile designer Ann Bibby, by artist and designer Fiona Gall and by furniture designers-maker Urban Upholstery. ‘Spirit of Design’ wanted to stress the importance of each other’s work, emphasising recycling as potential for a new style and trend. All the objects in the exhibition used to be waste and re-crafted with the vibrant design of the patchwork, the flamboyant matching of up-cycled textiles and the poetic of wirings and glasses. 19-23 September 2008
